ColumnistBaltic Rescue: Stray Dog Survives 75-Mile Journey on Ice Floe in Poland
by Danny Davids(44)

Polar icecaps are melting. The polar bears are running out of ice. I'm guessing that if you make those comments to Baltic, he'll respond with a shake of his head and a low growl. Who's Baltic? He's the stray male dog that a group of Polish ocean research scientists rescued from an ice floe in the Baltic Sea. It's believed he started his odyssey at least 75 miles away, somewhere upstream along Poland's Vistula River. Firefighters in the town of Grudziadz noticed the dog floating on the ice last Saturday. Several attempts were made to rescue him, but shifting ice sheets prevented it. By the time the crew of the " Baltica " discovered him a few days later, he was 15 miles out in the... ColumnistPETA and a Punxsutawney Phil - A Robot Groundhog for Groundhog's Day?
by Lorrie Davids(437) Red Star

Until today, I never gave it a second thought. Poor Punxsutawney Phil - what he goes through! He is kept in captivity, brought out before TV cameras and loud crowds each year on February 2nd (a torturous event) and is whisked away, never to be heard from for another year, though millions applaud or abhor his prediction for weeks after his appearance. PETA, the animal rights organization known for being over the top on many animal issues is at it again. They claim, in a letter written to Mr. Bill Deeley, President of The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, that the groundhog is overstressed by the hubbub surrounding his appearance. They believe the event is cruel. Instead, PETA suggests a... (continue reading)

ColumnistBobby Little Bear Silverheels
by Marijo Phelps(26)

Our thirteen year old blue eyed baby had given up her fight with kidney failure in early December. She died peacefully at home (her story Monochrome Snow Day and Katy Going). We had never had a Christmas kitten and from looking at my hubby’s determined face there wouldn’t be one under the tree this year either. “Three is enough.” He was referring to our remaining twelve paws, feline, of course, that roamed the house. Yes, they were trained to stay off any surface that might have food on it. The tables, stove, end tables and countertops were off limits. Hooney understands that perfectly so long as you are armed with a long range water squirter. I have often... (continue reading)

ColumnistA Few Reciprocal Quotes For Man's Best Friend
by Joel Hendon(58)

Some people don't like dogs. I can't imagine that. I even love mean dogs...far less than a good one but nevertheless, I just know that the mean one was raised and/or trained wrong. I've always said they are a perfect example of what we should be and I think God gave them to us to teach us that. Anyway, here are some quotes a friend sent me and some express my feelings also. " The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue. " - Anonymous " There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face. " - Ben Williams " A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than they love themselves. " - Josh Billings " The... (continue reading)
