RiCA is my White Shepherd/Yellow Lab puppy. She isn't really a puppy anymore; she is 10 years old, but she is my baby, my puppy. There are so many things to tell you about RiCA that I don't know where to start. Logic dictates I start at the beginning, so here goes.
I have always been one to think puppies are cute and dogs are nice, but they are dirty, hairy and not necessary. My husband, 2 daughters and I already had a Malamute mix in our pack and I loved her, but she was just a dog, after all. How ironic that I would fall head over heels in love with one of those creatures.
About 10 years ago my days would start out with a walk around our neighborhood. The timing was such that school kids were waiting at the bus stops and families were outside at most every house. A little white puppy came from what seemed out of nowhere and started following me. Hmmm. Dogs don't usually follow me. They will find the person that seems most approachable to cozy up to. I tried to " shoo " the pup away, but she didn't cooperate. I asked everyone I saw if they knew who the owner might be. No one had seen the little white puppy before. This little stray still followed me. When I got home I put her in the back yard and placed signs around the neighborhood. I asked friends if they wanted the pup should no one claim her. No one showed an interest.
The little white pup and our Malamute, Cinder, got along great, but there was no way I wanted to take care of two dogs. Cinder was already 10 years old. Besides, another puppy? Too much maintenance. We were a " one dog family " .
I heard the little pup cry out - in fear or pain - I didn't know, but ran outside to see that she had escaped the back yard and a neighbor's dog was chasing her. I picked her up, held her close out of reach of the threatening dog and took her back home. She seemed to know I had rescued her. She was MY dog now. Never did I dream that this little puppy would steal my heart so completely and soon it would be her turn to rescue me.
How she rescued me and how she got her name are pet tales for another day. In the meantime, I'd love to hear about your pet and how it became part of your family.

Thanks, Lori, for your comment and for reading. And this is just the beginning. I'm about to stir debate by writing about RiCA - as an angel! Imagine that! <grin>
