America's Most Popular Dog Breeds - Is Your Dog on the List?

Recently the American Kennel Club (AKC) released their list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in America . For 18 years straight the Labrador Retriever has held the coveted number one spot. Appearing on the list for the first time last year, the Bulldog, which debuted at number 10 moved up to number 8 in 2008. A total of 156 breeds are currently recognized and eligible for registration with the AKC. The list is compiled yearly based on the number of registrations with the AKC.

We currently have two dogs in our household. One, a White Shepherd, sometimes called an American White Shepherd is not recognized by the AKC and is not on the list. She would not be able to register even if the breed was included because she is possibly a White Shepherd/ Yellow Lab mix. Our purebred Siberian Husky is number 23 on the list.

Some of the breeds I have not heard of before. A breed called Havanese is the 36 th most popular breed. Do you know what it looks like? The Pulik ranks at 140 and the Glen of Imaal Terriers comes in at 154. At the bottom of the list is the American Foxhound.
