Dolphins Make Bubble Rings - Amazing Mammals Make Their Own Toys!

by Lorrie Davids(663) Blue Star

Dolphins are an animal that most everyone loves.  Kids have dreams of becoming a dolphin trainer or marine biologist or even an animal behaviorist after seeing a show at an aquarium or watching an animal channel on television.  Over the years we have learned about dolphins' high intelligence.  It is known  that they love to play and exhibit traits like loyalty not usually attributed to animals.  It has been discovered that these amazing mammals not only like to play, but can create their objects of play.

I saw a segment on ABC news last night that just blew me away. Sea World, Orlando videotaped dolphins playing.  No surprise there.  The amazing thing was these dolphins were "making" their own toys.  By using their blowholes, a dolphins twirl bubble ring, then play with it, shaping it with their rostrums.  The  two persons interviewed,  a dolphin expert and a bubble expert stated this is the first time they have seen an animal creating its toy making it even more amazing.

Since bubbles rise,  the dolphins make and play with their rings in the deeper water.  A National Aquarium Baltimore video shows one dolphin making a large ring then making a smaller one inside it forming a hoop.  The dolphin then swims through it.  Amazing!
