Duke of Spades....ahhhh, that was a dog!

Have you ever met a Standard Poodle?  If not, you really should.  They are amazing dogs.  This is about our Standard Poodle, Duke.  He came to live with us when our children were 2 1/2 years old and 6 months old, respectively.

He was all of 8 weeks old, and we hand picked him at the breeders house....well, come to think of it, did we hand pick him....or did he hand pick us.  Yes, that's definitely it.  He picked us. He loved us with his great big heart!! He came into our lives, and changed us from that very day.  He wasn't the kind of poodle some people think poodles are....he wasn't stuffy or pretentious.  He was loving, beautiful, full of fun, brilliant, and loving, I know I listed that twice....but he was so very good at it. He loved us.  He would guard HIS kids....he just wanted to be with them, protecting them.  He always gave the biggest hugs....seriously, HUGS.  Not rubs, or nudges....but down right hugs.  He loved us.

He was so smart, we literally had to spell words in front of him. We only had to show him how to do things once, and he never forgot them (notice, I didn't say "tricks" because that is a term for mere dogs....which he wasn't).

He was our 3rd child.  The Lord blessed us with him for over 14 years.  You see, his great big heart that I mentioned above....gave him trouble the last few years he was with us here.  His doctor told us he would only be able to live with that for a few months....but he proved him wrong....he lived for another 5 years.  He wasn't going to give up that easy.  He loved us.

We would sit and watch tv with him.  He loved tv.  It amazed him how other dogs, animals, children....could be in that little box....run around....and simply not be there in the room.  That was one thing he just couldn't figure out.  He would sit and watch, and then get up and look behind the tv, then go to the other side as if magically whomever or whatever he was watching would suddenly appear over there.  It was adorable. We would watch him more than whatever was airing at the time. He so wanted to meet what he saw on that strange little box in the living room.  It was priceless.

He died peacefully in his sleep 10 years ago.  And there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him.  We loved him.  We loved him so much.  Tonight my husband brought home a 60" television. My first thought....."Duke would love this big box"!!!!!  I know we would have sat for hours watching it together....and he would have gone beside it, and behind it...and he would have looked at me, and I would have known what he was thinking...."Where are they, Mom?  I want to give them hugs, too."   We loved each other.
