If you are one of the masses taking your dog with you on vacation this year, read on for some tips to make the trip a little easier for the humans and your pup.
1.) Visit the vet. While you may not need to worry about bordella, you do need to make sure that vaccinations and heartworm tests are up to date. This is the time to talk to your vet about any concerns you have with Fido in the car, such as car sickness or stress. Your vet can prescribe whatever meds you may need.
2.) Check out pet friendly accomodations. You can find a list by going to www.petswelcome.com or Googling "pet friendly hotels".
3.) Make sure you have a current tag on your pup. Include your name and your cell phone number. Do not use your home number; you are not there. Also take along vet records, a recent picture of your dog along with any medical concerns. If the unthinkable happens and you are separated from you pooch, you know you have done everything possible to ensure his safely. Always attach the leash before letting your dog out of your vehicle.
4.) Take along everything your dog uses daily, with some modifications: Collapsible food and water bowls, food, a jug of water, meds, chewies, collar (I like the Gentle Leader), leash, toys, chewies and treats. Take along a towel, for Rover to lay on and to dry off muddy paws. Take along a travel pack of alcohol free wipes.
5.) Use a vet approved pet crate in which your dog can stand and turn around, or a vet recommended dog seat belt/restraint system.
If you have more tips to add, please leave them in the comments. Have a great trip with your family and man's best friend!
