I Think My Dog Is Human

by Susan Thom(1)

I have a little tan maltipoo, about 3 years old, and I adore him like no other dog I've ever had. I have been talking to him since the car ride home from the breeder's. I tell him when I'm going to the bathroom, when I'll be right back, when to lie down because he's tired, etc. When he does lie down, he lets out a little sigh. He does that often. Just like a person.

He has several beds. I was never going to allow a dog to be up on the furniture. Yeah, that went out the window quick. However, he doesn't shed, and is hypo allergenic and small enough to keep nice and clean. He is totally alert, and perks his head up from a deep sleep whenever anyone leaves the room. He starts out sleeping in my bed, and then, somewhere into the night, he makes his way over to the big lump in the bed, and lies close, so I can feel him leaning on me, one of the most contented feelings.

He has a little bed set up in the dining room to be close to me while I'm on my computer for hours. When I am somewhere else, he has been known to stand by the computer and howl, because he wants me on it, and him close by. Then, he has 2 beds in the extra room-they aren't his but he utilizes them well. And there's the 2 couches, and he has his different spots on each. My son has a couch in his room, and there my little Benji may be seen at any given time, or on my son's bed.

He visits with him and his cat for a while, and comes back down to see what mom and dad are up to. If I start talking to him, he cocks his head back and forth, and truly seems to be understanding just what I'm saying. Except when he gets out without his leash, and bolts over to the neighbors house. Then, he doesn't appear to hear very well!

We had men working on the house once,  my partner talked to benji boy before they came, and told them there would be some men around, but it was okay. That precious little dog never bothered the men, or barked at them, and they were in and out a hundred times. The men even said that dogs always bark at them when they're in people's houses. It's truly like raising a three year old again.

He has his own little routine, and he doesn't seem to like it broken. Nap times come when he wants, treats at about the same time each day, the plastic squeaky ball comes out at around 7, then while mom and dad are watching tv, he enjoys his "feather bed" and feels safe, and loved, and wanted.

He's a great dog, he has been hope and faith and love to me, and I am blessed to have him.

you got it dianne,

i don't think there's any coincidence that i got him just before the divorce mess started.

he has comforted me, and made me feel happy.

he has 2 layers of hair, and i'm sure there are tiny little wings hidden beneath somewhere!

thanks for reading and commenting,

my best,

sue
