Dogs Eating Golf Balls - True Stories

by Lorrie Davids(691) Blue Star

Dogs eat things they are not meant to digest.  That's why we have to be careful what we give them to play with; after all, they'd just as soon eat it as look at it.  If a dog can't chew whatever it is playing with, it will just swallow it. Such is the case in several news stories.

Near Boston, a Rottie puppy's owners noticed their dog acting strangely,  After the pup threw up three of the golf balls (one inside a sock) the pup earned a visit to the vet.  Surgery was performed on the pup and five more golf balls were removed.

Near London, it is told an 18-month-old German Shepherd was coughing up blood.  The dog had been retrieving the balls from a golf club and now and then, eating them.  After surgery, 30 stitches later the pup is doing fine.

In another story from England a dog becoming ill warranted a visit to the vet.  An x-ray showed the pup had swallowed nine golf balls. This particular pup, Bertie, also had been shot at some time in her life.  Along with the golf balls, a bullet was removed from fatty tissue around the stomach.

In each case, without surgery, the dog would have died.  Quick thinking on the owner's part and the vet's quick action saved these dogs' lives.  Each dog is doing well now, but you can bet the owners' are watching their pups more carefully.

It is often said with a new baby, the house must be 'baby-proofed'.  We'd be wise to apply that adage with a new puppy.

Lorrie - good head's up! We keep talking about a dog as we live on 5 acres (fenced!) but have had only felines to date - I would have much to learn before bringing a canine home - I think this website and your pieces are going to help a bunch! Marijo

Dogs are wonderful companions.  But, just like a toddler, they taste everything.  If you haven't had a dog before, I'd select one that likes to please its owner like a Shepherd.  Huskies are a challenge, but if you are active - willing to walk a mile or better every day, they are happy.  They are diggers and chewers.

Thanks for reading and commenting!
