Pet Blessings Bestowed in October - How Can I Get My Pet Blessed?
by Lorrie Davids(425)
On or around October 4th, pet blessings will be bestowed by some Catholic and Interfaith Clergy. St. Francis of Assisi is the Patron Saint of Animals and the ceremonies will be held near the date of his death, well, almost 800 years later.
To invoke a blessing means to ask or speak special favor, good wishes, or approval meant to bring about happiness according to Dictionary.com. People nationwide can take their animals, on leashes or in cages, to a blessing ceremony; some complete with special guests like dog show winners. Some ceremonies or celebrations will include certificates of the blessing, music, food, door prizes and more.
Some pet blessing websites have places to write your blessing for your pet. You can Google the words 'pet blessing' and find over a million results.
I had no idea this practice was so popular. Not to be disrespectful, but I had just gotten used to people having their pets pictures taken with Santa and the Easter Bunny.
I am wondering what the purpose is for this practice. Is it to encourage the pet? The pet owner? Do those taking their pets to be blessed believe this is what gets their pets into heaven? Why a pet blessing? Is it just something fun to do with your pet that doesn't involve a trip to Petco? It is an event to thank God for the pet?
Before some of you label me a heretic, I believe my deceased pets will be in heaven when I get there. I also pray for my current pets' safety and ask for a long healthy life. I'd pray they'd shed less, but that seems foolish since I have 2 dog breeds known for dumping their coats. I pray for them because I believe God answers prayer, even about things many believe are insignificant. I believe God cares about what is important to his kids.
What is the purpose of the blessing? What is the benefit of it? I'd really like to know your thoughts on this. If you are one who will be going to a pet blessing event, let me know why. I hope you enjoy it and get much out of it.
You can find institutions having these ceremonies on the internet, or check at http://www.americancatholic.org/features/francis/US.asp

First time I heard of this Lorrie, I too pray for my kitties and know that the Lord has heard and moved on their (my) behalf before. Wait till I write Katy Dancer's story! (soon) MarijoRespond to this comment

Hi Marijo! I am looking forward to Katy Dancer's story! This animal blessing is new to me, also. I don't know why it is done, other than to make the owners feel good? If there is something more to it, I haven't seen it yet. My pets are part of my family, hence, they get prayed for! Thanks for reading and commenting. Have a wonderful weekend.
