Halloween Pet Costumes - Costumes to Buy or Make for Your Dog or Cat

by Lorrie Davids(425) Red Star

With Halloween just a little over a week away, most people have decided if and how they want to dress up.  You have costumes lined up for yourself and the entire family, but did you remember your dog and/or cat?  Over the last few years it has become popular to dress dogs in sweaters, tee shirts and what ever else the dog owner fancies.  It makes sense that halloween costumes for dogs have become big business also.  You can Google "dog halloween costumes" or "pet halloween costumes" and order elaborate costumes online or opt to be creative and see what you can put together to make Rover and Bootsie the cutest little pets on the block.  Below, I have listed some popular costumes to make or purchase.  Some can be purchased at your local discount store, some a nearby craft store and some from a professional costume manufacturer.

Some of the more popular online ready-made costumes for 2009 are a hot dog, complete with bun and condiments, Yoda, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and any superhero. Online, you will find what you want for your dog.  Hurry, though.  You only have a little over a week.  The online outlets show pictures so you know what to expect. Most of the more human looking costumes are made so the front legs go into the human looking legs.  A little above the legs arms are hung with an opening for your animal's  face, making it look like your pup is standing upright. For most, shipping is reasonable.

To find an off the rack costume check out your local party store or discount store like Wal-Mart. Popular costumes here are a bun alongside your dog, making it a hot dog, ladybugs, ballerinas and super heros. If you want to come up with something on your own, check out these ideas:

Many discount stores have "parts" of costumes for kids such as angel wings, halos, devil horns and small capes.  With these items, you can make your pet into an angel, a devil or a Super Hero.

Check out the infant costumes at you local discount store.  Many infant costumes will fit dogs (or cats) up to about 22 pounds.  Usually with minor adjustments, the costume will look custom made, and, really it is. These often include ladybugs, elephants, mice and pumpkins. You can get an infant sports jersey and bandana and your pet can display its (or, your) team spirit.

Check our your local craft store for doll accessories.  They can be easily adapted to use on a pet.  A doll's hat for a small dog, even doll shoes. Doll clothes can easily be fitted to a smaller dog.

One homemade idea is to dress your pup in a doggy tee shirt then attach purple balloons, a couple homemade felt leaves and your little precious is a bunch of grapes.  Use your imagination!  You will be thrilled with the ideas you come up with.

If you have some ideas for pet halloween costumes, please leave them below. Happy Halloween!
