Homemade Dog Treats - Christmas Cookies for Your Dog
by Lorrie Davids(430)
As the weather turns cold and Christmas approaches, many of us desire to bake goodies for the family, but did you know you can bake treats for your pups as well? The Internet is loaded with homemade dog treat recipes from the very simple with just three ingredients to more complicated snacks that you might be temped to purloin from the dog's cookie jar. Making dog treats can be a fun winter activity when the kids or grandkids are looking for something to do. And you know your dog will love you for it.
As you begin looking for some good (and easy) recipes, consider your dog's needs and likes.
Does your dog have any allergies, food sensitivities, or dietary restrictions? Many dogs don't tolerate wheat flour well. Wheat flour is a main ingredient in many of the recipes I saw. Also, be aware of soy. If, as they are now finding, soy is bad for humans, it makes sense not to give it to your puppy.
Other recipe ingredients to avoid are onions, salt, sugar, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, artificial sweeteners and chocolate.
How are your dog's teeth? There are recipes for soft treats ant only have 3 ingredients, all of which are fit for human consumption.
Do you live in a warm climate? Consider making some frozen doggie treats. No oven to heat up and no worries about spoilage.
Some recipes call for rolling out the dough and using cookie cutters. Online or in most craft and kitchen stores you'll find a bone shaped cookie cutter, but since your dog won't know or care, any shape will do. The point is to have some fun and treat your pup to a healthy, made with love treat from your kitchen.
I found interesting recipes at bullwrinkle.com and twodogpress.com.
