PETA and a Punxsutawney Phil - A Robot Groundhog for Groundhog's Day?

by Lorrie Davids(430) Red Star

Until today, I never gave it a second thought. Poor Punxsutawney Phil - what he goes through! He is kept in captivity, brought out before TV cameras and loud crowds each year on February 2nd (a torturous event) and is whisked away, never to be heard from for another year, though millions applaud or abhor his prediction for weeks after his appearance.

PETA, the animal rights organization known for being over the top on many animal issues is at it again. They claim, in a letter written to Mr. Bill Deeley, President of The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, that the groundhog is overstressed by the hubbub surrounding his appearance. They believe the event is cruel. Instead, PETA suggests a robotic groundhog be constructed and used.

Gemma Vaughan is the author of the letter which can be viewed at here. I sure wouldn't have wanted to put my name to such a letter.

Mr. Deeley responded that Phil is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania." According to an AP report, Phil is kept in climate controlled surroundings and is inspected annually by the Department of Agriculture.

Each Feb. 2nd, Phil is brought out before the crowds. If he sees his shadow, we have six more weeks of winter. If no shadow, spring is said to come early. Yes, it is a cheesy and definitely not science worthy, but it is a tradition. It is also a publicity grabber. That publicity is what Deeley believes brought PETA to PA. What do you think?
