2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show - Scottish Terrier Sadie Best in Show

by Lorrie Davids(425) Red Star

The Cadillac of dog shows, the Westminster Kennel Club 134th Annual Dog Show was help Feb. 15 and 16, 2010 in New York City.  This is the big one, the show serious dog owners drool to be a part of.  The dogs allowed into this show are considered to be the epitome of what each breed should be.

A little background info on how this works:  Dogs are categorized into seven groups; Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding, Sporting, Working and Terrier.  It is obvious why Toys get their own category, but I have to wonder about Terriers.  If anyone knows, please tell me.

The dogs are judged on appearance, mostly.  There are strict guidelines for height, build, coloring and disposition to be considered for this show.  A dog is entered by invitation or by winning or placing in specific shows throughout the year.

Dogs compete within their category with the winners eligible to compete for the top award, Best in Show.  Three breeds competed for the first time this year: Irish red-and-white setter, Norwegian buhund ( also known as Norwegian Sheepdog) and Pyrenean shepherd.  Through the years, Boxers have won 4 times;  German Shepherds, 1 time; Dobermans, 4 times and the Siberian Husky breed has one win.

For 2010, the Best in Show award went to Sadie, aka, Ch Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot. Sadie is  a 4 year old Scottish Terrior owned by Amelia Musser - a second timer to the Best in Show round of competition.

Terriers are, historically,  the most frequent winners in the Westminster show.  I really don't know the reason, as I would prefer to see a large, stately dog win.  A German Shepherd won Best in Show in 1987, the last time a big dog took the title.

This year's show included 2,500 dogs; 173 breeds and varieties of purebred  dogs. The oldest dog competing was Mr. Miyagi, a 12.5 year old Shiba Inu.  The youngest was Sutter, a miniature bull terrier, only 10 months old.

Dog shows are entertaining to watch, though not as exciting as the extreme dog sporting events.  If you didn't get to watch the big Show, you can catch highlights at  http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/2010/results/bis/index.html.

I have no clue but know if we ever get a dog it will be A German Shepherd mix or purebred - they are tops for me! Smart, stately, good looking!

Thanks, Marijo for reading and commenting.  Yeah, I love my white Shepherd.  That breed also loves to please its human!
