AKC Releases 2010 List of Top Ten Dogs in US

by Danny Davids(38)

The AKC has released its 2010 list of the top ten most popular dog breeds in the United States.  The list is compiled based on records of AKC-registered dogs.  Four breeds changed positions in the ranks from last year, but all of this year's Top Ten were in the list in 2009 as well.  Here they are, with the 2009 rankings listed in parentheses.

10.  Shih Tzu (same)
9.  Poodle (same)
8.  Dachsund (same)
7.  Boxer (Bulldog)
6.  Bulldog (Boxer)
5.  Golden retriever (Beagle)
4.  Beagle (Golden Retriever)
3.  Yorkshire Terrier (same)
2.  German Shepherd (same)
1.  Labrador retriever (same)

By the way, the Lab celebrates its 20th consecutive year as the number one dog in the US.  Why is it so popular?  Because it's smart, it's easily trainable, and it adores being around people.  Marley notwithstanding, these animals are the perfect pet for an active family with children, and shower their owners with love and affection.

Keep in mind this is the list for AKC breeds.  I feel very comfortable saying that for all dogs in the US, the number one breed on the list would be "mutt".  Regardless of where your dog does (or does not) fall on the list, the most popular breed of dog is the one that sleeps on your bed, shares your table scraps, and loves you unconditionally.  Good dog!
