Can Dogs Sense Something's Wrong and Respond? Yes! A Personal Story

by Lorrie Davids(675) Blue Star

Yesterday started out with a whirlwind of activity.  My daughter, 31 weeks pregnant woke up with contractions.  Make that one constant contraction.  She called me to come get my grandson so she and her husband could go to the hospital.

Once at the hospital, it was determined she was dehydrated and that started contractions.  She was put on an IV to stop contractions and hydrate her. After all was under control, she came to my house for the rest of the day so she could sleep and drink water (I was the water warden!).  It was at our house that something unsusal happened.

We have two pups in our family.  One of them is a White Shepherd/Lab mix; an almost 13 year old who, in her earlier years, was my constant shadow.  Now that she is older she prefers to get some attention, then go lay down in one of her favorite places. Her quiet action yesterday was unusual and proved she sensed someone "needed" her.

My daughter needed to use the restroom.  That is not one of my pups favorite places, so imagine our surprise when our pup followed my daughter into the restroom and laid down on the rug.  We believe she sensed our concern, knew who the concern was focused upon and acted in a sympathic way.  No nudging to be petted, no demands; she just lay there providing love and comfort to my daughter. I have referred to this particular pup as an angel in the past and can't help but wonder if she had a God-given nudge to act yesterday.

Both pups were unusually quiet yesterday; the younger, a husky, often "talking"  never once made a sound or pawed at the door to go out. Yeah, they knew there was something going on.

This is not the first time I have witnessed our pups comforting or alerting us to situations.  The boisterous husky has more than once alerted me to situations.  Once, after chewing a hole in our waterbed she came and got me.  Yes, she caused the problem, but she did know something was not right. Another time, she woke me when my older pup was sick.

I'm sure I could find many stories and research of dogs reading, smelling, sensing trouble and responding on the Internet.  I just wanted to add my own personal story.  I love my pups!

My daughter and baby are fine, well hydrated and anticipating his birthday in about 8 weeks!  God is good.
