The FDA is investigating reports of dog illness and death after consuming chicken jerky dog treats. In a report dated Nov. 18, 2011, the FDA states there has been an increase of reports by vets and dog owners in which illness or death occured after a pup ingested chicken jerky treats imported from China.
While the FDA is not positive the illnesses are from the treats, it is confident enough to put out the warning. Because of the increase in reports, the FDA is conducting extensive chemical and microbial testing on the jerky treats, but so far has been unable to identify the toxin.
What to Watch For:
If you have fed your dog a chicken jerky treat, or several watch your pup for the following symptoms: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water intake and/or increased urination.
If your pup exhibits any of the above symptoms, immediately contact your vet. The safest way to go until more is known is to abstain from feeding chicken jerky-type treats to your pup.
If you have observed illness or death of a pet after eating these treats go to http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/ReportaProblem/ucm182403.htm to report it. This site has a lot of good information on how to determine a problem with pet products.

I have purchased and given these type treats to my dogs. I won't again until I see evidence the products are safe. My pups never exhibited symptoms, but they don't get treats that often and each weighs about 55 pounds so the toxin may not have been sufficient to do damage that I could observe. The FDA warning is a good reminder to pay attention to what our dogs eat, or even chew.

If you’re looking for a SAFE, REAL ‘American Made’ chicken jerky for dogs or cats, we started making our own Chicken Jerky for our 3 dogs after we ran across the FDA warning of 2008 about Chinese chicken treats making dogs sick or killing them. It turned into a cottage "Mom & Pop" business and we now sell our TriPom Chews online and in 20 stores in the New England area. Our products are the only homemade, handmade, ‘Maine Made’, ‘American Made’ Chicken Jerky produced from whole, restaurant-quality chicken breasts containing NO Additives and NO Preservatives. Our 3 Pomeranians (our babies!) taste test every batch for quality.Respond to this comment

An FDA document leaked this week from a confidential source within the US Congress details the chronological timeline of tests that the agency has performed on chicken jerky treats since 2007 – tests which many pet owners say have ignored some of the most potentially lethal substances possibly responsible for the rash of pet illnesses and deaths.Read the report at on the TriPomChews website.Respond to this comment

Thanks, Ken, for reading and sharing your information. It is sad these dog treats are still on the shelf!
